Dr. Kuhu Roy writes,
📢 Remember the Livestock Export Bill, 2023?
For any activity that is not legalized under the
purview of law, there is always a parallel, cruel industry that thrives. The
Livestock Export Bill, 2023 was meant to give a legal sanction to the ongoing
illegal trade of animals, who were labelled as 'commodities.' That is what
precisely backfired because sentience was denied to the animals in the Bill,
making all of them eligible for export. In no time, massive uproar followed and
the Bill, introduced by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, had to
be retracted.
Brilliant strategists always take lessons out of
their failures, are seldom demoralised and devise a plan B, just in case plan A
does not work.
In came a Suo Moto writ petition (based on a
newspaper clipping) on August 11, 2025 asking for blanket removal of stray
dogs. Another protest follows, in the next hearing, adherence to Animal Birth
Control Rules, 2023 is emphasized and the original verdict quashed. Then,
again, comes the next judgement targeting all the animals to be removed from
public places under the pretext of public safety and country's image.
My two cents, the verdict is Livestock Export
Bill, 2023 coming to fruition through plan B. This is a green signal to animal
trafficking.
PS That's the revered cow in India on a garbage
pile looking for food. But, our non existent and the very few over crowded
shelters will give them a 5 star treatment.
