Dr. Kuhu Roy writes,
Either dogs in need
find me or I find them. Meet Mohan. Named so because he reminds me of my
Manohar, the gentle giant.
Yesterday evening, when I was leaving the police
station after giving my statement in a case I had filed last month, this dog
appeared out of the blue. The right side of his face was all swollen. A classic
case of a blunt road hit.
I cursed myself because I had forgotten the
medicine box at home. Perhaps I was tired mentally, that is why it slipped out
of my mind. But you cannot afford to make such mistakes. I followed him quietly
to discover his hideout. I was not familiar with the place. I fed him and he
looked at me in disbelief. I just so wished I had the meds.
All during the evening and when my sleep broke at
night, I had him on my mind. But somewhere, there was this strange trust that
we would meet again. So today, when I went back to that unknown area with his
medicines, I began to look for him. The moment I took a turn, he once again
appeared out of the police station and began to sniff in the air. You have no
explanation for some bonds, it is just love. His swelling has started to go
down. There is somebody up there who heals those for whom there is no one.
I got down, prepared his medicines and he came and
stood next to me, watched while I prepared his medicines. He had them as though
he knew I was there for him, that I loved him, no matter the apathy of everyone
around, blind to his plight. A stomach full meal later, another friend of his
arrived and he too had food. He continued to look at me with curiosity as I
left. No tail wag. But I don't need that. That he came out knowing that I
wanted to meet him no matter what is the greatest gift. Max three more days of
medication and he should be back to normal.
Now, here's what I want to emphasize once again:
let our hurry not weigh down heavily on any human or animal. There is nothing
more precious than the gift of life. Just because Mohan is a stray dog does not
mean that his life matters any less.
