Rani, the batwoman dog. A dog we never even heard the bark of was our dearest Rani. Patience, elegance, grace, calm on her face, name that beautiful quality and she had that. She was found in June 2005 as a faithful subordinate to Goshi, a lactating stray mother dog who had delivered back then and Rani was the nanny to her pups. No fuss, no demands, being happy in whatever she got, Rani, undoubtedly was a saintly soul. She had a smiling face. If your day was turning out to be bad and you would watch her once, everything would soothe from within, so calming was her presence. She would run after the rickshaw with loyalty even on days she was not hungry. She would merrily wag her tail and watch from a distance (she was not allowed to come near because Goshi threatened her otherwise). Rani needed that bullying from Goshi everday, that added a sense of belongingness. But when Goshi was not around, she would come and leap and play along with Tri, who later on became the old man of our house.

Stray dogs take a massive emotional hit when their pack members suffer. Goshi was hit in an accident on 5th March 2010 that resulted in a spinal injury. All efforts were put to help her recover but she succumbed to her injuries on the 5th of April. Surprisingly, from that onwards, Rani’s appetite dipped. The calm on her face was taken over my grief. She had lost her leader. Thereon, feeding Rani became a huge challenge. It was as though she had given up on food not because of any health issue but because she was mourning. She was last seen on 4th May 2010 as the following day she too met with an accident and disappeared. There is no resolution when they go missing. Goshi and Rani, both deserved better, both of whom we lost in road hits in two months. Is it that easy to be heartless to hit and go? Do your part, give animals a brake.
