We lost five precious lives last week. The grief numbs.

These dogs grew old with Mrs. Roy and were milestones in her two decades of journey.

She was a part of their daily struggles. They, in turn, always stood by her in her fight against the system. Their never say die attitude is what she imbibed from them.

It had started with Amba, the elusive one. Her death has shaken Patta Gobhi, her mate, to the extent that he has left the area..

Then Kareena decided to leave. Her paw had been badly injured, she had healed. Then, one morning, she was found shivering despite lying in the sun. A trip to the vet revealed very low hemoglobin, and high creatinine. She hadn't shown any sign. She had always been a frugal eater, infact, she was named so for her size zero figure. She went away that night, in the place she had lived all her life. The locals buried her. They too are missing her.

Maggi, an old dog, mom to Hasmukh, Luna and Simba, had been missing. No one knows how she died, her rotting body was discovered the day hostel reopened after the vacations. She was an extremely beautiful dog, the end was so terrible. Her body was thrown into the garbage. She didn't get a burial, it hurts.

Martha' s daughter, Kali, (first litter), was the next to go. Less than two years of age, she had been losing weight. She was too shy, she couldn't be caught to be taken to the vet. Then, last week, she was found sleeping in a pit. She was gone. A villager buried her there itself.

Then the news of Simba (Maggi's son) came. The previous Monday Mrs. Roy had comforted him, he had lost his mom a day ago. On Tuesday he was run over by a truck and taken by someone. All these days while Mrs. Roy was clapping for him to come to eat, the construction site workers knew about the accident, but no one told her. She learned about Simba’s accident from a student. Must those who took Simba given him a burial? He was a huge, beautiful dog.
