The next story in the give animals a brake series is of our dearest Christopher.

Christopher was merely hours old when he came under our care on the streets in December 2006. His birth was quite unexpected given the fact that his newly migrated mother, Kata Kaan, had a clipped ear, which meant she was sterilized. However, this is a common malpractice, wherein ears are clipped and dogs are left back without spay/neuter, as Animal Birth Control at most places goes unmonitored till date despite the ABC 2023 Rules.

Back to Christopher, ours was a daily association. From that hours old tiny fellow to a handsome boy with a dashing personality, that one thing that remained unchanged was his pup type behaviour the moment he saw either of us. His face would break into a smile from the rough and tough guy he portrayed himself to be in that area. His tale would go left-right oscilating like a pendulum.

Christopher was neutered and his mother spayed, with latter having a clipped ear that was not deceitful of her status any longer. She lived thereon just for herself, with no stress of delivering pups again, putting an end to the wretched cycle of emotional, physical and nutritional drain.

Christopher grew up to be lanky with a killer smile. He took charge of the premises of a Bank and dare any miscreant enter the area. He also became the leader of the pack when Branched Tail and Husky left for the hereafter.
Christopher was a full of life dog, looked after by us every single day for 13 years and 8 months.

On 1st August, 2020, everything changed. Bleeding from the ear, eyes numb with pain, I rushed Christopher to the vet after he was mercilessly hit by a car and then also run down. The vet just had a fleeting glace at him. With everything closed for the weekend, I brought Christopher home. That night was the longest one of our life. Christopher began to puke blood and howled. Once, twice and we begged him to liberate himself as no vet was available to even grant him a dignified death. A vet was finally arranged. I went to grab my mask and returned to find a lifeless body of Christopher.

The home fell silent but Christopher’s blood curdling shrieks continued to echo inside us even though he was gone. Period. We live with that pain of his brutal death. Sadly, that does not stop with Christopher. It happens with countless animals everyday whose plight remains unheard. Care to be their voice?
